Film: Brewster's Millions

Director: Walter Hill
Genre: Comedy
Source: USA (1985)
Rating: PG
Location/Format: HBO
Grade: C+

Sometimes you're just in the mood for an 80s comedy, and so you take whatever happens to be playing on HBO.

The film is a remake of a 1945 movie with a similar premise, and I can see why it was remade in the 80s even as I wouldn't mind seeing a modern day remake, as I do think the film has some built-in and interesting commentary on how we view wealth and prestige in the US that might have some different repercussions today. I guess maybe it would be too easy to spend $30 million in a month these days: just blow it all investing in a website or video game that shuts down before release and there you go.

Richard Pryor remains pretty funny, as his levels of frustration climb and climb throughout the movie, and John Candy is highly likable as the concerned and genuinely good friend. The fashion/decor of the film is at times hilarious, and overall the film hasn't aged as well as others have. Still, a fun enough way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

Alternate Film Title: "80s Hair and Glasses Prevent Me From Judging the Attractiveness of Cast Members"
